Hello all! This blog is an exercise in creating blogs for use in the classroom. What would you look for in taking a Sign Language introduction class? Would you like information about the culture of the Deaf, or simply focus on the language?
I think that I would like to get a better understanding of the culture and where the signs came from. I would also like to know the basic signs to be able to communicate. With understanding the culture and the background of the signs you would be able to communicate better with someone that uses signing.
I would like to know information about the culture of the Deaf and the language. I think it would be very interesting and the more one can learn, the better it is for them. I also would like to learn as much as possible from a introductory class.Learning the basic would be a good start, and from there I would like to learn more so I can carry a conversation in sign language.
I would enjoy learning about both. I would love to learn to communicate using sign language and be informed of the culture. I think you would need both to completely understand. Sign language involves so much you would need an introductory course first that teaches basic signs.
If I were signing up for an introductory course, I would expect more of a focus on the language. I would be interested in learning about the culture. I think that interest would grow more after I had an introductory course in the language.
I would love to learn conversational sign language, and words that I would use often in the classroom. I think I would be interested in learning about deaf culture and language, because they seem to be interwoven.
Your question brings to my attention that I had never thought of a culture for the deaf. I must say I would not only want to know about the the culture but I would also like to know about the language.
